Bernie's Beach Bar is the evolution of La Bec Rouge that will feature an open-air, second-story, island-themed 42-foot bar with more than 100 stools under a thatched Caribbean-style overhang and even more tables out in the beach air.

“There’s nothing like this on the front strip,” said Al Fleury, the owner of La Bec Rouge and Wally’s Pub.

Beachgoers have noticed that La Bec Rouge has gone from a four-story L Street favorite to a hole in the ground, as it awaits a dramatic overhaul that is set to begin this week. But what they didn’t know, until now, is that La Bec Rouge won’t be returning under the same name or idea.

“We’re going all in,” Fleury said of the $600,000 building renovation — and that figure is before all the brand new tables, chairs and kitchen equipment.

Bernies Beach Bar Coming Soon

Fleury said the pipe that burst on Christmas Eve and sent water pouring down over four floors caused more damage than initially anticipated, and a building inspector said the building’s framing and structure was no good. So, as is becoming the theme on the beach, he decided to go for a major renovation project.

Fleury said Bernie’s Beach Bar, named after his golden retriever, is going to feature a 55-foot-by-85-foot “giant open deck level” that’s bigger than any others around. In the center of the deck level, which sits atop a bottom floor with a 22-foot ceiling so it’s high enough to look out over the surrounding buildings, is a 42-foot bar with a beach style thatched roof that hangs over 12 feet on either side, which he said will make it “the biggest bar around.” Surrounding the bar will be 65 tables, all with a view of the ocean, he said.

And it doesn’t stop there. Fleury is embracing the beach vibe like La Bec Rouge never did before. He said there used to be a rule that said patrons had to be wearing more than just a bathing suit or bikini.

“I kind of nixed that rule,” Fleury said, noting that he’ll encourage beachgoers to pop in off the beach and have a drink.

He’s also bringing in a “killer menu,” he said, with all kinds of island-themed beach foods, including skewers and burgers, similar to the eats formerly offered at Saunders at Rye Harbor.

Also taking a page from Saunders’ book, Fleury said he’s going to bring in the band Island Side, which will be the focal point in Bernie’s Reggae Sundays, when diners will be able to groove to island-style reggae sounds coming from a stage on the back of the deck level starting at 3 p.m. and going all night.

And Fleury refers to this project as Stage 1. He said over the course of next winter, if the beach demands it, he may add another floor to allow more indoor dining. He said he also might turn the bottom level into more of a club in the future, which he’ll be able to do since the steel supports he’s using enable a much more open space than existed before.

Though he would have made these changes anyway, Fleury said the ubiquitous attitude of improving the beach only fuels developers like him.

“This is the time to jump on board,” Fleury said. He added: “It definitely helps because it looks so much cleaner.”

He said there’s much more encouragement to add open views when restaurant owners know their diners will be looking at a clean beach.

“It’s a lot different than looking down on it 10 years ago,” Fleury said.

Fleury’s investment is an example of the type of improvement that officials hoped to see when they fought tirelessly to secure state funds for a $14.5 million redevelopment project that featured the all-new Seashell Stage. Walking along Ocean Boulevard among the various construction crews early this spring, tourists can see that the idea is spreading.

Foundation work at Bernie’s is starting this week, and Fleury said wood construction will be in full swing by the end of the month and the restaurant open by Memorial Day.

The list of recreational adventures at Hampton Beach includes land and water activities, ranging from those that involve physical prowess to those that emphasize motorized fun.

Numerous Ways to Break a Sweat or Dive in and Get Wet – There’s More Than Simply Swimming!

The list of recreational adventures at Hampton Beach includes land and water activities, ranging from those that involve physical prowess to those that emphasize motorized fun.

When you smell the crisp, stimulating salt air off the ocean and feel the overwhelming warmth of the sun as it reflects off the water, you’re going to feel an energy that’ll inspire you to engage in new activities. That is one of the things that happens to most people when they find that there’s so many great things to do along New Hampshire’s seacoast.

On land, there’s a boatload of activities, including various water parks simply waiting for you and the kids to enjoy their cool waters. Think you can make par on one of the area’s mini-golf courses? Or maybe you’d like to try one of the many fine professional golf courses in the area?

If in-line skating is your thing, then Ocean Boulevard offers plenty of space for a rolling tour of the beach area. Or you can ride a bike or scooter up the coast, checking out the sites, visiting other beaches and stopping for a picnic at one of the numerous state parks.

And for those who love to shop there are plenty of stores along the boulevard selling clothing, souvenirs, beach gear and more.

Hampton Beach NH Fishing

If you’re a boater or sailor, the harbors at Hampton, Seabrook and Rye offer launch facilities. Various charter services provide whale watching, fishing and sight seeing opportunities out of those same harbors.

Go out on a whale watch and get up close and personal with humpbacks, minkes and finbacks, as well as migrating seals and dolphins. Fishing charters regularly catch mackerel, striped bass and inshore cod, while the nearby Isle of Shoals is famous for its “blue fish blitzes” that leave anglers reeling (literally).

If you’d like to go a bit smaller and control your own destiny on the water, surfing, wind surfing, jet skiing and kayaking are all readily available. You can easily lose yourself day after day in these exhilarating experiences.

Oh, yes, and you can also simply swim in the cooling Atlantic waters of Hampton Beach.

Camping Along the Coast – Offering Access for the RV Enthusiast

There are limited sites within Hampton Beach but you’ll find plenty of opportunities to campout in the surrounding area.

If you’re interested in RV camping right along the New Hampshire coast, there’s only one place to go – the Hampton Beach State Park RV Campground. This is the only coastal RV camping area in the Granite State. Located close to a variety of seaside attractions, the park is situated on the southern fringe of Hampton Beach on Route 1A at the Seabrook/Hampton line.

There are 28 sites that include full water, electric and sewer hook-ups. Only RV’s with full hook-ups are permitted. The park, which has an onsite store, does not accommodate tents. The Hampton Beach State Park RV Campground is open from late April to late October, taking reservations for dates from late May to early September. All other times are on a first-come/first-served basis.

Numerous other private campgrounds are located a few miles inland, including those that offer facilities for tent and RV camping. If you’re looking to stay right along the coast, you’ll have to plan early or go at an off-peak time.

There are 12 beaches, each one unique, along the approximately 17-miles of winding New Hampshire coastline. Sandwiched between Massachusetts and Maine, New Hampshire's beaches offer easy access, intimacy and beauty.

There’s More than One Great Beach in New Hampshire

There are two basic types of beaches along the New Hampshire seacoast. There are those that are owned and overseen by the towns and those that are owned and run by the state. Additionally, there are beaches that have numerous services such as changing rooms, rest rooms, snack bars, lifeguards and nearby restaurants and/or stores, while there are others that have few if any services at all. All but one of the beaches, Sandy Beach, are located on Route 1A.

Seabrook Beach is the southern most beach with grassy dunes, great kayaking and a relaxed atmosphere. It has no rest rooms and little parking. Just north of Seabrook Beach is Hampton State Park Beach. Like all state beaches, there’s a fee for parking. There are rest rooms, along with a snack bar and convenience store. This beach has a campground with full RV hookups. The beach is beautiful and white, with tide pools and an expansive natural rock wall.

Hampton NH Beaches

Hampton Beach is the central tourist attraction and fully equipped to accommodate large numbers of the people. It has been a popular vacation spot for 100 years. Just north of Hampton Beach is North Beach, which has a high concrete wall that offers the coastline protection from large ocean storms. There’s limited metered parking, lifeguards and a bathhouse.

North Hampton State Beach has limited metered parking, changing rooms, rest rooms and lifeguards. Across the road, there’s an ice cream stand that also offers snacks and sandwiches.

Bass Beach is a pebbled cove that’s difficult to access. When the waves are right it’s a haven for surfers. There is limited parking on the side of the road and no facilities. It’s also known as Rye Rocks Point. Just north is Sawyer’s Beach — a small beach that’s owned by the Town of Rye. There is special permit parking for residents only at Sawyers.

Bordering Sawyers Beach, just to the north is another state park – Jenness Beach. Jenness has very limited metered parking and some unmetered parking on the side of the road. This beach includes rest and changing rooms and is patrolled by lifeguards. There are a few stores/snack shops across the street from the parking lot.

Foss Beach is a horseshoe shaped semi-sandy/rocky beach with a rock and dirt seawall. There are no facilities on this town-owned beach, which sits just north of Rye Harbor State Park. There’s parking on the side of the road.

Rye North Beach has a small amount of parking that’s limited to residents. It’s a difficult beach to access due to the many private homes that are situated directly on the beach. Rye North Beach abuts Wallis Sands State Park, which has a large lot with a $10 per car fee for parking all day. Local residents also sell parking spaces for the day. This beach has full facilities, including a snack bar, rest rooms and changing rooms. This is a family friendly beach with easy access.

Going north along Route 1A, about two to three miles after Wallis Sands, is the turnoff for Route 1B. This road leads to Newcastle, NH, which is an island community connected to the mainland by a small bridge. As the road winds, you’ll come to the entrance to Great Island Common. This popular town park includes a playground, changing rooms and restrooms. Newcastle Beach, a soft beach with gentle waves, is kid friendly. There are picnic areas, grills, some pavilions and a large, grassy common area. There’s a $3 per person fee to enter, but it is open to all. There’s plenty of parking too.

Despite it’s short coastline, New Hampshire’s beaches are varied in terms of access, facilities and services. From Seabrook Beach to Newcastle Beach, there’s a beach that’s just right for you along the New Hampshire coast.
